Tongue Tied

This morning, Katie and I went on a little adventure to find Rome’s international district (mission: peanut butter for Katie, rice for Missa). We walked around, found the market, and inside it, a bunch of little delights from China, Pakistan, India, Africa, and most everywhere! :)

Hungry, we later walked into a bar (a coffee shop here in Italy) and attempted to find out how much the sandwiches cost. The shop’s owner was Chinese, rattling off to her friend in Mandarin.

I don’t speak any Mandarin (wo pu huey chiang). She didn’t speak any English.

I tried in Cantonese; she couldn’t understand me.

We spoke to each other in… Italian.

How bizarre.
